Lausanne, Switzerland: The Women’s FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier initially scheduled to be held in Changzhou, China, will be moved to India. After the Chinese women’s national team qualified directly to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 through winning the Asian Games last week, discussions were held between the Hockey National Associations of China and India for a potential change of hosts, motivated by the fact that maintaining this event in China whilst their national team has already qualified for the next Olympics would have impacted the fans and media excitement in the country.
The move to India would ensure exactly the opposite and this would benefit all teams as they can expect playing in that wonderful atmosphere and excitement that Indian fans and media are always creating. Therefore, both Hockey National Associations of China and India came up with this proposal, which has now been approved by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
The tournament will be held in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India from 13 to 19 January 2024. The other three FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers will be played in Muscat, Oman (Men’s – 15-21 January 2024) and Valencia, Spain (Women’s and Men’s – 13-21 January).
6 Women’s and 6 Men’s teams will qualify for Paris 2024 through these FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers, for which the participating teams from Oceania, Europe and Asia are already known.
Australia (Women and Men), the Netherlands (Women and Men), China (Women) and India (Men) have already secured their spot at the Paris 2024 hockey Olympic tournaments, therefore joining hosts France.
The upcoming Pan American Games and African Hockey Road to Paris tournament will determine the remaining teams qualifying directly for next year’s Olympics (2 Women’s and 2 Men’s teams) as well as the teams playing the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers.
The Paris 2024 hockey Olympic tournaments will take place from 27 July to 9 August next year.
