The return of international hockey to Pakistan through the Friendship Hockey Series continues to be a grand success both on and off the field with the cultural and sporting exchange between the two sides highlighting the passion for hockey and Pakistan’s resurgence on the global hockey stage.

The series which began on 6 March, with an intense clash between the Pakistan and Germany Junior Teams that ended 4-3 in the favour of the visitors, continued with two more nail-biters on 8 and 11 March, even as both ties went the way of the reigning junior world champions Germany. The two matches, which ended in identical 2-1 scorelines, were played in Lahore and the close encounters made the matches memorable for fans who turned up in big numbers, and kept them at the edge of their seats until the very end.

Speaking about the return of hockey action to Pakistan, FIH President Tayyab Ikram, who was also in attendance at the match on 8 March, said: “Pakistan has a rich hockey history, and it is heartwarming to see the country once again hosting international matches. This series against Germany is a crucial step towards reviving Pakistan hockey and bringing global opportunities to its players. From rebuilding the hockey structure to creating more opportunities for female athletes, FIH is committed to supporting Pakistan in its journey back to the top!”

Before the match, President Ikram also honored key figures in Pakistan hockey, presenting the FIH Token of Appreciation to Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Youth Program, Tariq Hussain Bugti, President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, and other distinguished personalities for their contributions to the sport.

On non-match days, following training sessions at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore, the young German athletes also frequently engaged with aspiring Pakistani players. These exchanges will surely help inspire the next generation of hockey stars in Pakistan, strengthening the bond between nations through hockey.

Off the pitch, the German team also had the opportunity to explore Pakistan’s renowned sports manufacturing industries. On 10 March they visited Awan Sports, the world’s top sports equipment exporters, where they gained insight into the craftsmanship behind high-quality hockey sticks. This visit reinforced the deep connection between Pakistan and the global hockey community.

The German team has had a fantastic experience in Pakistan, enjoying not just the competitive matches but also the warm hospitality and cultural exchanges. From training with young players to visiting the country’s world-class sports manufacturing industry, the trip was a memorable one that strengthened the sporting ties between the two nations. The players and staff were deeply appreciative of the warm welcome and the chance to be part of a historic moment for Pakistan hockey.

The Friendship Hockey Series will conclude on 13 March in Islamabad, after the first three matches were played in Lahore. Both teams will be determined to finish the series strong and the fans can expect another exciting battle on the field.

As Pakistan continues to develop its hockey infrastructure, the vision for a brighter future includes more opportunities for players and a strengthened domestic hockey structure. With strong leadership and growing international collaborations, Pakistan is well on its way to reclaiming its place as a powerhouse in the hockey world.
