The second day of action from Round 1.2 of the Euro Hockey League took place on Sunday, and featured stellar performances from some of the world's most gifted players including Timo Wess, Teun de Nooijer and Jamie Dwyer. However, Germany's Olympic Gold medal winning striker Christopher Zeller was the star of the show with a record-breaking goal-scoring display for his Rot-Weiss K├Âln team against Italian champions HC Bra.
You can find a brief summary of the action below, with extensive reports available on www.ehlhockey.tv - the official website of the Euro Hockey League.
POOL D: ZELLER NETS SEVEN AS ROT-WEISS KÖLN DESTROY HC BRA
Christopher Zeller was the star of the show as Rot-Weiss K├Âln surged to a 11-1 victory over Italian champions HC Bra in Pool D. Zeller was in breathtaking form, scoring seven times and being at a central figure in virtually every attack put together but the German Champions. Rot-Weiss set two Euro Hockey League records, with 11-1 being the highest ever score and Christopher Zeller becoming the first player to score seven times in an EHL match. The result was good enough to eliminate HC Bra from this season's Euro Hockey League competition, with the Pool winner to be decided by Sunday's match between Rot-Weiss K├Âln and Pol Amat's Club Egara.
POOL A: DE NOOIJER & DWYER INSPIRE BLOEMENDAAL TO VICTORY OVER WETTINGEN
Teun de Nooijer and Jamie Dwyer both got on the score-sheet as reigning Euro Hockey League champions HC Bloemendaal stormed to a 7-0 win over HC Rotweiss Wettingen of Switzerland. It was a solid start to the tournament by the Dutch superstars, with the victory sealing their place in Round 2 of the competition along with fellow Pool A team Der Club an der Alster. The result means that Rotweiss Wettingen have been eliminated from the 2009-10 season of the Euro Hockey League. HC Bloemendaal and Der Club an der Alster will play each other on Sunday to decide which team will take the all-important top spot in the Pool.
POOL C: EAST GRINSTEAD REACH KO16 DESPITE AMSTERDAM DEFEAT
England's East Grinstead became the first team to qualify for KO16 from Pool C despite falling to a 2-1 defeat against Taeke Taekema's Amsterdam H&BC. The narrow loss earned the Grinstead the point that they needed to reach the second round, with Amsterdam sure to join them if they defeat Poland's KS AZF AWF Poznan on Sunday. Grinstead took the lead through South African international Gareth Carr, but goals from Rob Reckers and Jan Willem Buissant gave Amsterdam all five points in a closely fought encounter.
POOL F: JONES & MONTE GUIDE BEESTON TO VICTORY OVER KHC LEUVEN
Great Britain international Martin Jones scored twice with Australian defender Andre Monte also netting as Beeston started their first ever Euro Hockey League campaign with a deserved victory over Belgium's KHC Leuven. The result means that the two qualifiers from the Pool still remain unknown. Everything will be settled in Sunday's clash between Beeston and home favourites St Germain, although it would take a huge victory for the French team to qualify.
The action continues on Sunday when German champions Rot-Weiss K├Âln take on Club Egara at 10.30 (GMT +1) to decide which team will finish as winners of Pool D. At 12.30, Dutch giants Amsterdam H&BC will be hoping to continue their winning ways against KS AZS AWF Poznan, with Amsterdam needing just a point to take their place in KO16. The final match of the Round 1.2 takes place at 16.30 and is sure to be watched by a large crowd, as home favourites St Germain hope to overturn the form book and defeat England's Beeston HC.
