The International Hockey Federation will use a Video Umpire at the women's Rabo Hockey Champions Trophy starting in Amsterdam, Netherlands, tomorrow.

Following dry runs and monitoring the requirement at various FIH Tournaments over the past 3-4 years, the FIH Executive Board has agreed that a full trial of the Video Umpire be conducted. The final decision to proceed was taken today after a test by Champions Trophy host broadcaster NOS, in consultation with FIH representatives.

The Video Umpire will use the existing TV camera coverage, supplemented by in goal cameras.

Decisions which can be referred to the Video Umpire
The decisions for referral will be restricted to the following three scenarios, which each require a simple yes or no answer:

  1. Whether the ball has crossed the goal line when attempting to score a goal
