USA Field Hockey selected its 2007-08 National Men's Team and the Moorpark High Performance Training Center captured its second consecutive national title to conclude play at the second Men's National Championship tournament at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Moorpark capped an undefeated run in the tournament with a 6-2win over Mid-Atlantic while the New York High Performance Training Center defeated San Francisco Bay Area 2-0 for third place.
The tournament also served as the selection opportunity to the U.S. National Team with 27 athletes selected to the 2007-08 national squad. Head Coach Nick Conway and USA Field Hockey will announce the U.S. nominations to the Pan American Games team in early June.
National Squad member Jon Ginolfi (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored three goals in the championship game to earn the game's Man of the Match honor while Pat Harris (Moorpark, Calif.) scored two goals in the final and earned Top Goal Scorer honors for the tournament with eight goals in four games. Ginolfi, 18, was also named the Young Player of the Tournament.
National team goalkeeper Jason Wellings (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) of San Francisco was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Four-time USA Field Hockey Player of the Year Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.) will captain the 2007-08 U.S. team.
In its second year, the National Championship tournament features 64 athletes on four men's regional teams competing for top honors and for spots on the 2007-08 USA National Squad. Under-21 age-eligible athletes were also selected to the Junior National Squad and will join additional athletes to be selected at the Junior National Championships, 26 June-1 July at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
Members of the newly-selected U.S. team will compete in a four-nation tournament in China in June before competing in July's Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The winner of the Pan Am Games earns the continent's automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games.
