S. Thyagarajan – affectionately known as “MR.T” to the hockey fraternity – was congratulated by the Directors and the Staff of The Hindu Group last week for completing fifty years in sports journalism at the newspaper. He is currently the Deputy Sports Editor of the Group.
Mr Thyagarajan Joined The Hindu in 1962 and throughout that time has covered a multitude of national and international hockey tournaments. He has reported for The Hindu and its sister publication The Sportstar at six Olympic Games (1984-2004), eight hockey World Championships (1982-2010), eight Asian Games (1982-2010) and a host of Asian Championships. He has also been a working journalist at numerous Champions Trophy and Azlan Shah Cup tournaments as well as over twenty National Championships. Away from hockey, he has reported at various international events including athletics, tennis, table tennis and badminton.
Between 1998 and 2006, Mr. Thyagarajan was President of the Field Hockey Commission in the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), and also served as member of the Communication Committee of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) until it was disbanded two years ago. He is also a former President of the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI), and is now heading the Media Commission of the Asian Hockey Federation.
