It was a steep learning curve for Costa Rica as the South American state hosted its first ever international indoor hockey tournament at Curridabat College in San Jose. Both the host nation and El Salvador were competing for the first time at an international tournament in the men's five-team championship, while the Costa Rica women's team were also participating in their first international at the three-team championship at the same venue.
Also making their international debut were many of the technical delegates and umpires, and to support them in their international careers, the tournament officials participated in a Technical and Umpiring course run by two very experienced Argentinian match officials – tournament director, Adrian Della Mattia and Cinthia Melli, the umpires manager at the competition. The facilities necessary to run the courses were provided by the Costa Rica Olympic Committee.
Guatemala men and Panama women emerged as the tournament winners, both teams managing to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament, and those results were reversed for the runners-up positions, with Panama coming second in the men's competition and Guatemala in second place in the women's event.
Top goal scorers were Leonidas Leiva for Guatemala men's team, who netted 10 goals in four games; while it was a tie for top spot in the women's matches between Celina Portugal and Kersthy Montenegro – both Panamanian players scoring six goals apiece.
The final placings were:
Men's Tournament: 1. Guatemala 2. Panama 3. Ecuador 4. El Salavdor 5. Costa Rica.
Women's Tournament: 1. Panama 2. Guatemala 3. Costa Rica.
