The opening day of the Euro Hockey League Round 1.1 tournament in Barcelona saw H.C. Rotterdam setting new records on their way to taking top spot in Pool C. Their stunning 13-0 victory over Scotland’s Grange HC was the highest score-line in EHL history, while Rotterdam also became the first club to score 100 goals in the competition. The 100-goal marker was reached when Jeroen Hertzberger netted his third of a five goal haul in the match to extend his EHL all time top goal-scorer tally to 31.

The opening match of the day saw Beeston HC of England cruise to a 6-0 success over Poland’s WKS Grunwald Poznan. The encounter between the current leaders of the England Hockey League and Poland’s finest was goal-less until the 45th minute when David Ames opened the scoring before Ben Arnold, Simon Egerton (3) and Harry Martin added their contributions.

Royal Léopold THC started their first-ever EHL campaign with a superb 4-1 victory against Russia’s Izmailovo Moscow in Pool E. A late goal from Léopold’s Argentinean star Agustin Mazzilli ensured that Izmailovo missed out on what could be a crucial bonus point.

The biggest shock of the day was in Pool F, which saw Russian champions Dinamo Kazan record a stunning 3-2 win against Spanish Copa del Rey champions Club de Campo. Kazan established a 2-0 lead early in the match thanks to strikes from Anton Kornilov and Alexandr Siuskin before Campo got back into the game thanks to a brace of own goals. However, Kazan claimed their finest EHL result to date when Pakistan’s Imran Warsi set a glorious penalty corner flick high into the roof of the Campo goal to seal a famous victory.

The tournament continues on Saturday when Amsterdam H&BC (NED), Atlétic Terrassa (ESP), Uhlenhorst Mülheim and Berliner HC (GER) enter club hockey’s greatest stage.
