2011 FIH Player of the Year Maartje Paumen has become the all-time top scorer for the Netherlands women, breaking a record which had stood for 27 years.
The penalty corner ace scored her 128th and 129th international goals in the Investec Cup on Thursday evening (7 February 2013), with her team easing to a 3-1 victory over host nation South Africa. The previous record of 128 was set by fellow penalty corner expert Fieke Boekhorst, who played for the Netherlands in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
It is the latest in a long line of achievements for the 27-year-old Netherlands captain, who over the past eight years has claimed every major title the sport has to offer. As well as Olympic Gold medals from Beijing 2008 and London 2012, Paumen has also been a central figure in the Dutch squads that were victorious at four Champions Trophies (2004, 2005, 2007, 2011), three European Championships (2005, 2009, 2011) and a world cup (2006).
Maartje Paumen holds the record for most goals scored in women’s hockey at the Olympics with 14, 11 of which were scored at the Beijing 2008 Games.
