“Peter is a fantastic addition to our leadership team and he’ll inject a lot of innovation and critical thinking as we implement our performance strategy,” says Alan Brahmst, Director, Performance Strategy and National Teams. “We have ambitious targets with our Junior and Talent Development Programs, and Peter’s technical knowledge of the game and his track record for winning will be a key ingredient to building these programs.”
Having recently moved back to Canada from San Francisco, California, Milkovich is excited to help shape the future of Canadian Women’s Field Hockey.
Peter grew up playing hockey at the West Vancouver Field Hockey Club – a club that his father started in 1972. He represented Canada 268 times from 1988 to 2000 and was the captain of Team Canada in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. A two time Olympian, in 1999 Milkovich was voted to the FIH World XI. Most recently, Milkovich served as a tactical consultant for Canada’s Olympic Team in Beijing 2008 and volunteered for eight years in the NCAA as a coach of the University of California at Berkeley Women’s Varsity Field Hockey Team.
“As a former player, I believe I have a unique understanding of Canadian field hockey and its position in the sport globally, which will add to my strengths in developing a successful team. The task of building a strong Junior Women’s Program will involve a great team of experts committed to developing a culture of success that will in time generate positive results for Canada.”
Milkovich has been coaching sports for over 25 years from the club level to the National Team level. His commitment to live, work, train, learn and compete in some of the top hockey nations (Netherlands, Australia, England) has provided Peter with a vast set of resources and tools that will be necessary to achieve the international success Canada desires.
Milkovich also has a successful career in global macro finance, where he developed a strong understanding for fundamental risk taking, game theory, negotiation and a critical eye to detail, which will help him take the Women’s Junior National Team to the next level. Milkovich holds a Bachelors of Human Kinetics from the University of British Columbia, a Post Graduate in Business Administration from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and is a NCCP Level Three certified coach.
