The bronze medal won by Great Britain’s Hannah Macleod at the London 2012 Olympic Games was stolen, leaving the 28-year-old devastated. Her prized possession went missing on Thursday night after a team celebration in London. But in a happy twist of events, the medal was posted anonymously to the England Hockey Head Office in Buckinghamshire.
At the time of the theft, Macleod asked for whoever had the medal to post if back to GB Hockey -- and someone did just that.
The theft took place in a nightclub in the London district of Mayfair where Macleod and other members of Team GB were enjoying a night out following a reception with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Macleod was not the only Olympic medal winner to have had their prize taken from them that evening. GB rowing star Alex Partridge has also reported his bronze medal from London 2012 and Team GB jacket as stolen.
On Friday, Macleod released the following statement through Great Britain Hockey.
“I’m absolutely gutted that my Olympic bronze medal has been stolen. Winning it in August was an incredible highlight for me and for this to have happened is simply shattering. While it means everything to me it has no value to anyone else and I just hope that whoever took it can hand it in or leave it somewhere that means I can get it back. I just want it back.”
“I would like to thank everyone – my friends and family, the media and the general public – for their overwhelming support of me and Alex Partridge. The response has been incredible. If you know anything, or think you might know someone who does, please report it to the police or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
Alex Patridge's jacket was recovered, however his medal still remains missing.
