She may be 36, but it would seem that Argentina attacking ace Luciana Aymar has no plans to hang up her stick just yet. The seven times FIH Player of the Year has just been named in the Leonas squad that will compete in the Pan American Cup, which takes place in Mendoza, Argentina later this month.
Aymar’s inclusion is not only clear evidence that Argentina have set their sights firmly on winning the Pan American Cup, but also strongly suggests that she may well play on until next summer’s Rabobank Hockey World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands.
As well as Aymar, the squad contains no fewer than 12 of the team that won the Silver medal at last year’s London 2012 Olympic Games, with four players having been central figures in the U-21 squad that also grabbed Silver at the recent Ergo Junior World Cup in Mönchengladbach, Germany. The complete Argentina squad for the Pan Am Cup can be found below.
Luciana Aymar is one of Argentina’s most famous sportswomen and widely considered to be amongst the very finest to have played the game. Her speed, skill and ability to ghost past players with relative ease has made her arguably the most feared player of her generation, with Argentine media sources often comparing her natural talent to that of footballing icon and compatriot Diego Maradona. For this reason she has earned the nicknames "La Maga", "El Diego" and "La Maradona del hockey".
