Gold Medal Match
Australia 3 defeated Pakistan 0
Goals: AUS - Liam De Young PC 18m, Luke Doerner PC 57m, Jamie Dwyer FG 60m

The Australian men's team completed a golden hockey double for the home teams with controlled victory over Pakistan in the final in Melbourne.

The victory was Australia's third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal, but the match was marred by an extraordinary display of indiscipline by Pakistan's Tariq Aziz, who was shown a red card for an incident off the ball involving Australia's Rob Hammond in the 44th minute.

Hammond and Aziz were running side by side into the Australian goal circle when the Kookaburras midfielder fell to the ground with blood streaming from a cut mouth. Hammond immediately left the pitch to receive treatment and did not return to the pitch.

It was not the first time in the tournament that Aziz had fallen foul of the official, with the 21-year-old suspended for two matches in the preliminary rounds for a simialr incident when Pakistan played South Africa.

Despite their dominance, Australia struggled to convert promising lead-up play, with Liam De Young's penalty corner varation in the 18th minute the only goal of the opening half.

With Aziz's dismissal, Australia's turned up the pressure and after a series of near misses, Luke Doerner flashed a drag flick into the left corner and then Jamie Dwyer scored with a superb goal to seal the gold medal for the tournament favourites.

Pakistan tried to bridge the gap but Australia were composed and professional late in the match and recorded an emphatic unbeaten tournament and third straight Commonwealth Games win.
