If ever you needed proof that being involved in hockey can lead your life in exciting new directions, then the story of Sarah Powell should provide it. The former Wales hockey captain has made a little bit of history by being named as the first ever female chief executive officer of Sport Wales.

Sarah earned over 70 caps for her country, with participation in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur (MAS) being one of her career highlights. Following her on-field retirement, she enjoyed a spell coaching the Welsh U-18 hockey team.

"Becoming chief executive officer is an immense honour, and a privilege," said the former school teacher, who officially takes up her role in October. "Recent sporting successes show that [Wales] has the potential to be a leading light in the world, not just in terms of international success and medals won, but in terms of the life opportunities we can offer to every one of our children. I am incredibly proud to have been entrusted with this responsibility.”

According to Sport Wales chair Laura McAllister, it was Sarah’s passion that made her stand out from a strong international field of candidates. "Her energy and vision was compelling”, commented McAllister. “It was that passion which impressed us, alongside her understanding of all aspects of sport and physical activity. I am convinced that she will drive even greater success for sport in Wales and Sport Wales, in the coming years."

It goes without saying that the FIH wishes Sarah every success in her new role.
