The International Hockey Federation is saddened to hear of the death of former Hockey Ireland President Herbie Sharman who died earlier this week after a long illness.

The former Irish U18s and U21s team manager dedicated a huge part of his life to hockey over the years having become involved in the sport whilst a teacher at Kilkenny College.

An enthusiastic supporter of all Irish national teams, he leaves having witnessed Ireland men's qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games, the first time they have done so in over 100 years.

He served as President of the Irish Hockey Association (now amalgamated Hockey Ireland) from 2010 to 2012. During his time in office, Herbie not only made strong connections with clubs and organisations across Ireland, he also made many more friends in the hockey family from around the world.

FIH would like to offer its sympathies to Herbie's family and friends at this difficult time.
