- Bidding closes 28 September 2018
- The sport’s biggest events, the FIH World Cups, expected to attract exciting proposals
- Congress provides opportunity for developing nations to host major hockey event
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is reminding all National Associations that the deadline for bidding for the FIH Congress in 2020 and the FIH World Cup in 2022 is approaching.
28 September 2018 marks the final deadline for all interested parties to submit their interest in hosting one of these key events.
Following the success of the Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup London 2018 and excitement growing ahead of the upcoming Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, it is expected there will be considerable interest in hosting these prestigious events which will take place in four years time.
Earlier this year, over 120,000 fans purchased tickets for the World Cup in London which saw the world’s top ranked women’s team, Netherlands, defeat Ireland to claim one of the biggest titles in the sport. In less than 90 days time, 16 of the world’s best men’s teams will go head to head in India as they aim to become world champions.
National Associations are being encouraged to work with cities, hockey clubs, venues and other partners in order to submit appealing bids for these events. The FIH will be looking for both high quality and innovative proposals which will build on the positive impact recent World Cups have had on hosts cities, countries and across the world.
Hosting an FIH Congress is also considered a significant attraction – giving both established hockey countries and developing nations the opportunity to host this event.
Whilst some National Associations might not be in a position to host a global hockey competition, the opportunity to host a corporate event, like the FIH Congress, provides the perfect opportunity to showcase their country and support for the sport, as was experienced in Dubai in 2016.
