Dr. Eric Broom has worked as a teacher, a Regional Officer with Sport England, a Human Kinetics Professor at UBC, an Associate Deputy Minister for Sport in British Columbia and has held many consultancy roles in sport. Yet Dr. Broom shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to leave his legacy on coaching in Canada.

In 1975, four years after receiving his Ph.D. in Physical Education from the University of Illinois, Dr. Broom delivered his very first 1st coach education course. A technical expert and coach educator for Rugby, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis and Field Hockey; he has positively affected the lives of many coaches in Canada. In fact he has successfully trained over 10,000 coaches as a NCCP Master Learning Facilitator!

In particular, he has a special place in his heart for the sport of field hockey and is a cherished member of Field Hockey Canada and Field Hockey BC.

He coached many athletes on both the Canadian National Men’s Field Hockey Team and University of British Columbia Men’s Team.

Eric’s leadership in BC has also been extended towards the national training centre concept and junior athlete programming – both of which are being rolled out nationally by Field Hockey Canada. His optimistic and encouraging style has influenced and shaped the growing sport of field hockey. His legacy is felt at the community, provincial and national levels.

Dr. Broom is the recipient of the Governor General’s Commemorative Medal in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and Canada.

With accolades that span his entire coach education career, we are thrilled to honour him with the Geoff Gowan Lifetime Achievement Award!

"Field Hockey Canada would like to congratulate Eric" says Mary Cicinelli, President of Field Hockey Canada. "Eric has been a valuable contributor to the training and certification of coaches in Canada and especially in the development of field hockey as well as our coaches across the country."
