There are just six matches remaining in the hugely successful first edition of the Hero Hockey India League, which has seen many of the world’s finest players gather in India to take part in a spectacular and unique event.
Although there are still two Round Robin matches left to play, much of the attention is now focussed on the Final Four tournament which takes place this coming weekend in Ranchi. Delhi Waveriders, Ranchi Rhinos, Jaypee Punjab Warriors and Uttar Pradesh Wizards have all booked their places in the Semi Finals, with perennial strugglers Dabur Mumbai Magicians falling by the wayside.
The final nail in the Magicians’ coffin was hammered home on Tuesday, with UP Wizards grabbing a 1-0 win against the team from Mumbai thanks to a penalty corner from former Australian international Luke Doerner. The result guaranteed a Semi Final berth for UP Wizards, and condemned Mumbai to the wooden spoon.
Although the Semi Final fixtures are not yet 100% confirmed, the form book and the format of the tournament allows for some educated speculation about the potential match-ups. First placed Delhi Waveriders look likely to be playing against Uttar Pradesh Wizards (4th), with second placed Ranchi Rhinos going head-to-head with Jaypee Punjab Warriors (3rd). However, should UP Wizards upset the odds and defeat Delhi during their Round Robin meeting this Thursday (7th February), they would move up to third in the table and set up a meeting with second placed Ranchi Rhinos. The Waveriders would then face a Semi Final meeting with Jaypee Punjab Warriors on Saturday.
Regardless of the potential meetings, the HIL Final Four tournament in Ranchi is certain to be an event to remember. A capacity crowd of 5000 will enjoy Sunday’s tournament final which will have added sparkle thanks to the presence of Indian television presenter and model Mandira Bedi, who is the celebrity host. There will also be a grand presentation ceremony followed by a magnificent fireworks display, ensuring that the inaugural season of the HIL goes out with a bang.
