The Canadian men's national team defeated the United States 5-1 Wednesday evening in Vancouver. The game was the first of a series of four test matches to be played between the two sides at Wright Field on the University of British Columbia campus.
Vancouver natives Mark Pearson and Scott Tupper each scored two goals for the Canadians to seal the victory. Wayne Fernandes of Mississauga, Ontario also scored for the winning side. Remco Couwenbergh notched the lone goal for the Americans. Canadian goalkeeper David Carter earned the win in net.
Canada took an early lead on two successful corner attempts when Tupper and Fernandes found the back of the net in the 9th and 25th minutes respectively to make the score 2-0. Couwenbergh would cut the lead to one going into halftime.
However Canada would score three unanswered goals in the second half en route to the 5-1 victory.
The last time the two sides met was in the final of the 2009 Pan American Cup in Santiago, Chile. The Canadians won 2-1 in overtime in the championship game. The win earned Canada a berth in the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010
