Berta Bonastre has been appointed the Director of the FIH Women's World Cup of Hockey Terrassa 2022 to be held from July 1 to 17.
Born in Matadepera, Barcelona, 29 years ago, Berta announced last week, through a letter addressed to the Spanish fans, her farewell from the Spanish team after 203 caps with the RedSticks. With two Olympic diplomas, achieved in his participations in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020, the historical bronze medal in the 2018 World Cup, also the bronze in the Antwerp European Championship in 2019 and the victories in the World Round 2 in 2017 and in the 2019 Hockey Series, she leaves behind a magnificent track record with the Spanish team and embarks on a new challenge: being the director of the tournament that will take place at the Terrassa headquarters.
Let us remember that the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup Spain & Netherlands 2022 will be held in two venues: Amstelveen and Terrassa. Berta will lead, together with the executive director Óscar Gallego, the Spanish headquarters. In this way, Bonastre will become the main image and representative of a World Cup in which the players are preparing to try to improve the bronze achieved in the last World Cup, London, 2018, where they won the
bronze medal.
It should be noted that this Thursday, February 17, the official presentation and the draw in which the 16 classified teams will meet their rivals in the group stage will be held at the Museum of Science and Technology in the city of Egar.
The participants will be Spain and the Netherlands, as hosts; Belgium, England, Germany and Ireland like the other European teams; South Africa as the African representative, having won the recent Africa Cup of Nations; China, India, Japan and Korea, as Asian representatives; Argentina, Chile and Canada as Americans, and Australia and New Zealand, from Oceania.
The draw will be conducted by the CEO of the FIH, Thierry Weil, accompanied by Berta Bonastre herself and the coach and former Spanish international, Santi Freixa. An appointment that can be followed on Watch Hockey.
Berta Bonastre: “Being the tournament director at this World Cup means a lot to me. This World Cup takes place in the city where I was born and where I have played hockey all my life and it is magical to be able to collaborate in such a unique and special event. I am very happy because this way I can contribute my grain of sand from a new perspective and that fulfills me and makes me feel closer to my colleagues. In addition, it gives me the opportunity to discover new facets and face this personal challenge. My functions will be to communicate everything that we are doing from the organization, transmit the values of this World Cup and the passion for hockey, not from the perspective of a player, but as a spectator of such an event”.
