As reported last week, the Euro Hockey League and the Catalan Hockey Federation planned a fantastic promotional event in the famous Arc de Triomf district of Barcelona at the weekend.

Well, we are pleased to say that the Saturday showpiece was a great success, with many locals and tourists getting a chance to sample what Hockey is all about in beautiful sunshine.

A terrific day included various demonstrations of the sport by the junior teams of RC Polo de Barcelona and Catalonia HC, while lots of kids were given their first ever hockey experience on the specially laid pitches in the famous Passeig Lluis Companys. The Catalan Hockey Federation supplied the sticks as youngsters of all ages were given a truly memorable chance to take up the game. Throughout the day, it was estimated that over 150 children were given their first exposure to the sport, an experience enjoyed by absolutely everyone present.

All of the participants and spectators at the event were given a special voucher for this coming weekend’s Euro Hockey League Round 1.1 tournament, which takes place at the Complex Esportiu Municipal Pau Negre-Parc del Migdia. The voucher allows standard Round 1.1 day ticket holders the chance to bring a child aged between 6 and 16 to the tournament completely free of charge.

The Round 1.1 event features some of the EHL’s stand-out teams including Dutch giants Oranje Zwart, English champions Beeston, current German league leaders Harvestehuder and KHC Dragons, the Belgian outfit that claimed the EHL silver medal in 2012-13 season.

A total of 12 teams will compete in four pools, all hoping to secure one of eight available places at Easter’s thrilling KO16 event. A further 12 teams will be in action at Round 1.2 Lille, which takes place between Friday 25 and Sunday 27 October.
