It would appear that host nation Argentina have gone goal crazy this week, registering a staggering 40 goals in their opening three matches at the Women’s Pan American Cup in Mendoza.
Las Leonas achieved their latest goal-scoring feat in Tuesday’s Pool A encounter against Guyana, hitting 11 goals in each half to record a staggering 22-0 victory. Luciana Aymar and Carla Rebecchi netted four goals each, with Martina Cavallero and Rosario Luchetti both scoring hat-tricks.
The result confirmed Argentina’s place at the top of the Pool, with Canada sealing second place with a convincing 5-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago.
Argentina and Canada are joined in the Semi Finals by USA and Chile, two teams that were also victorious on Day 3. USA appear to be Argentina’s biggest rivals for the continental championship title, and showed great form on Tuesday with a top class display against Uruguay. The Americans emerged as 6-1 winners to top Pool B, with all of the goals coming penalty corner variations that allowed Rachel Dawson, Kelsey Kolojejchick, Shannon Taylor, Kathleen Sharkey, Paige Selenski and Katie Reinprecht to leave their mark on the score-sheet. Chile were also in sparkling form, powering to a 9-0 triumph over Mexico to make certain their place in the final four.
The exciting Semi Final stage of the tournament takes place on Thursday, with USA facing North American rivals Canada before Argentina enjoy a tasty South American meeting with Chile.
