The women's team of Australia took the gold medal at the 'Good Luck Beijing' tournament, the test event for the 2008 Olympic Games. The Hockeyroos defeated China in the final (5-3) after penalty strokes. Argentina took the bronze medal after a 2-1 victory over South Africa.
It wasn't easy for tournament favorite Australia to win the 'Good Luck Beijing' tournament. Final opponent China proved to be one of the serious contenders for a medal at the Olympic Games, to be held exactly one year from now.
Australia opened the score out of a penalty corner of Madonna Blyth. Just before the end of the first half, China equaled the match when Zhaoxia Chen scored out of a penalty corner.
China took the lead in halfway through the second half (field goal of Quigling Cheng). Australian Hope Munro scored the 2-2 just two minutes later.
As both teams didn't score anymore in regular time and in extra time, a penalty stroke competition had to bring the decision. The Australian goal keeper Rachel Imison stopped three of the four Chinese penalty strokes, while her teammates scored three out of four penalty strokes. This gave Australia the victory.
