Australia defeated India in a penalty shoot out to win the women's Indira Gandhi Gold Cup in New Delhi after scores were locked 2-2 at the end of extra time.
After teams couldn't be separated after 70 minutes of regulation and two periods of extra time, Australia was more efficient in the penalty shoot out to win 3-1.
Australia had to rally from a two-goal half time deficit and controlled play in the second half to score twice and force extra time.
Neither side could manage a goal in the extra period however, forcing the match in a penalty shoot out.
Australia converted three of its five penalties, while India managed to score just once in four strokes.
India got off to a great start, with Mamta Kharab scoring in the sixth minute to give the home team an early lead. Their lead was doubled shortly before half time with Jasjeep Kaur converting from a penalty corner.
After the half time break, Australia responded with waved of attacking movements and finally broke through when Nikki Hudson scored a penalty corner goal in the 56th minute.
The leveling goal was quick to arrive with Donna-Lee Patrick scoring two minutes later before Australia prevailed in the penalty shoot out to win the tournament.
In the playoff for bronze, Italy scored two first half goals from Francesca Faustini to shock New Zealand 2-1 in the bronze medal playoff.
It was the second time within a week that the world's 20th ranked team had defeated New Zealand, an outfit that won the Rabobank Hockey Champions Challenge earlier this year and are currently listed at number six on the Sahara WorldHockey Team Rankings.
Faustini converted in the eighth and 18th minutes to put Italy in control of the match and New Zealand could only manage to grab one goal back through Kayla Sharland in the 41st minute.
