The Kookaburras have been unable to continue their winning streak against New Zealand following a thrilling three all draw in game one of the three game series.

1700 fans were treated to a high scoring match in Newcastle with Australia doing the majority of the attacking early in the first half, only to see New Zealand score from a penalty corner and take a one goal advantage into the half time break.

Australia came out as a determined unit in the second half and again peppered the goals only to once more be denied.

After a few scares for the Australian defenders in front of the New Zealand goals, the Black Sticks looked certain to take a two goal lead after receiving a penalty shot 10 minutes into the second half.

However, the burling save from Australian goal keeper Daniel McPherson proved to be the spark Australia was looking for, with Matthew Naylor and Nathan Eglington scoring two quick goals only moments later thanks to the good work of Jamie Dwyer who was consistent all night.

Despite Australia controlling the majority of the second half, New Zealand refused to lay down and took it up to the Kookaburras, with New Zealand young gun Simon Child converting for the Black Sticks to again draw the game at the 64 minute mark.

Australia again stepped up the intensity as a result, with Matthew Naylor scoring his second goal for the match only moments later.

However New Zealand lifted once more, with Child again converting with only one minute to go to tie up the game.

Kookaburras coach Barry Dancer said although the draw was disappointing, he was pleased with certain aspects of his team's game and will focus on a number of areas for the two remaining games of the series.

"Overall I thought it was a good spectacle with some very good goals scored for both sides. I was disappointed with a few lapses, particularly deep in defense where we were found wanting on a few occasions," said Dancer.

Dancer said the teams focus will remain on the next two matches rather than looking ahead to next weeks Champions Trophy tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"We will be looking to improve in a few areas before we take on New Zealand again on Friday night in Sydney and we will remain focused on what we want to achieve throughout the remainder of this series."
