Australia and India will play for the women's gold medal at the XVIII Commonwealth Games after emerging from their respective semi finals in Melbourne today.

After struggling to find their rhythm in the first half, Australia produced a more assured performance after the break, with goals scored early and late in the term to ensure a comfortable margin of victory.

England had early chances but couldn't snatch the initiative before Australia gradually worked their way into the match.

India will get a chance to defend their title after edging New Zealand in a tense second semi final. The match was evenly contested with India scoring just seven minutes before full time after New Zealand had looked the likely winner for much of the match.

Australia and India have already met once in the tournament, with the home team victorious 4-2 in the opening round of preliminary play.

New Zealand and England will contest the bronze medal playoff. The teams met earlier this week with New Zealand recording a comfortable four-goal victory.

In the classification matches, Scotland scored three times in the opening 12 minutes before coasting to victory against Malaysia to claim fifth place, while South Africa finished seventh after a dominant win over Canada.

In the battle for ninth position, Barbados scored their first victory of the tournament to ensure they finished above Nigeria in the battle to avoid last place.

The gold medal match will be played at 13:00 on Saturday, with the bronze medal playoff at 10:30.
