The Koninklijke Nederlands Hockey Bond (Royal Dutch Hockey Association) has appointed Alejandro Verga as the new coach of The Netherlands boys A side, succeeding Albert Kees Manenschijn.
Verga is a former Argentina international who played 149 matches for his country. He represented Argentina at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where his side finished in eighth position. He has been a resident in The Netherlands for many years, and is the father of current Dutch international Valentin Verga.
Verga has plenty of experience regarding coaching national teams, including a spell as coach of Argentina men. He also took charge of the Argentina U-21 side that claimed second place at the 2001 Junior World Cup, and held the role of assistant coach with the same team in 2004. In the Netherlands, Verga coached Amsterdam H&BC to success in the 2005 European Club Champions Cup – the forerunner to the Euro Hockey League – before winning the European Cup II in 2007.
The Dutch boys begin their training program this Autumn, with the team preparing for April’s Volvo 4-Nations Cup which takes place in The Netherlands. Verga will remain active with the men’s team of HGC, where he is a trainer and coach.
