Following the tragic events surrounding the terrorist incident in Nairobi, Kenya, the African Hockey Federation (AfHF) has announced that the men’s and women’s Africa Cup of Nations event, which was due to take place in the city, has been postponed.
The AfHF confirmed the news to the International Hockey Federation on Wednesday. A new date for the event will be agreed and announced in due course.
Kenya is currently in three days of national mourning following the end of the four day siege at Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Centre. 67 people lost their lives.
“On behalf of the AfHF, I offer our apologies to all who have worked tirelessly towards this tournament”, said AfHF Honorary Secretary General Nii Quaye-Kumah in a statement confirming the postponement. “I thank you all for your patience and support during this difficult time and we also encourage National Associations to spare a thought for our brothers and sisters in Kenya (KHU) and to reach out and console them on the loss of lives.”
The FIH wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the people of Nairobi and everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.
