FIH Targeted Assistance Programme

The FIH Targeted Assistance Programme (TAP) is the FIH's global initiative to support Continental Federations and National Associations in the development of long-term sustainable development projects or programmes. Below is a summary of the current projects in the region.

TAP West Africa

TAP West Africa is a FIH/AfHF Targeted Assistance Programme supported by UK Sport and England Hockey. The programme is an outcome of the successful England Hockey bid for the 2018 World Cup. The programme has the following objectives:

  • Elite Player Development (with the Ghana Women's National Team) - To improve the performance output of the Ghana Women`s team to increase their chances of qualification to World Level competition (OG & WC).
  • Workforce Education - To develop a trained workforce, including local educators and foreign mentor coaches, and to establish a sustainable education programme.
  • Event and Competitions Development - To provide West African nations with accessible regular international competition. i.e. shorter traveling times. To provide event/competition volunteers with access to FIH/EHF event management expertise to enable them to develop and run more effective/efficient events.
  • Equipment - To supply equipment to West African nations to enable them to develop hockey at a grass roots level.
  • Infrastructure - To provide appropriate places to play that support other areas of the programme.

  • Phase one of the programme took place in Ghana from 17th to 27th May 2015. A TAP Team of experts travelled to Accra and Kumasi in Ghana to deliver elements of the project.
Phase 2 took place from 15th to 29th August when the Ghana National Women`s Team was hosted by England Hockey at Bisham Abbey and Loughborough University.
The team will continue with the training plan from Accra and there will be further Coach and Umpire Education programmes. This will coincide with an FIH Hockey Academy Educator training event where 2 of the TAP team will under go training. See the some of the latest FIH articles related to the programme below:
