Multi-sport Fields

Ensuring a sports facility is sustainable is often crucial to its funding and long-term success, whilst for others, maximising the use of available space is the key to increasing sport’s provision in a neighbourhood. These trends are increasingly making the concept of multi-sports fields attractive to those investing and funding community and education sports facilities. However, not all sports can be played on the same types of surface and a significant factor in the long-term success of a facility is ensuring it caters for sports that can be satisfactorily played on the same surface.

As with all multisport facilities, the performance of these fields is a compromise, meaning their suitability for higher levels of competition should be assessed before a field is built.

Football and Hockey

For many, being able to play hockey and football on the same field, creates more opportunities to play hockey. Working with FIFA, FIH have developed guidance on dual sport fields that can be used for grassroots and school level hockey and football.

Hockey, netball and tennis

Hockey preference to play on a short dense pile synthetic turf surface, complements the types of surfaces that can also be used for community and school level netball and tennis. Working with England Netball, the UK’s Lawn Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation, the GEN 2 category of synthetic turf sports surface has been developed.
