Mutsa Bera: want to help another generation pursue their hockey dreams

In the lead up to the International Women’s Day 2023 we are speaking with women in hockey, who are inspiring passionate fans around the world, through their contributions to hockey. In today’s interview, we speak with Mutsa Bera of Zimbabwe.

Mutsa Bera has been in and around hockey throughout her life, playing at all the junior levels in Zimbabwean hockey, culminating in leading her nation at the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup in Potchefstroom in 2022.

Mutsa says she has taken inspiration from the junior women’s team coach Tendayi Maredza, who she has looked up to for much of her life. Maredza is an influential figure in Zimbabwean hockey supporting the development of young talent for over a decade. Off the field, Mutsa’s career has always been supported by her parents, helping her overcome any challenges she has faced and now she wants to carry that legacy forward and support others in hockey achieve their hopes and dreams.

Mutsa has spent the past year balancing her hockey dreams and a full-time job and talks about the importance of hockey in her life, which drives her to persist with the balancing act despite the challenges. Hockey gives Mutsa an opportunity to express herself freely and she derives great joy from the community that the sport allows her to build with other women.
