Lausanne, Switzerland: Taking the opportunity of its 48th Congress, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) today launched the global “Sustainability Strategy for Hockey”.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals and following the IOC (International Olympic Committee) lead, the strategy is based on the three following core pillars to capture the many projects that together will create a sustainable future for hockey:
- People: having a positive impact on everyone involved in hockey
- Planet: leaving as small a footprint on the planet as possible
- Prosperity: enabling hockey to prosper for future generations
The strategy provides a framework to include the numerous relevant projects related to sustainability already existing within the global hockey community and to provide strategic direction and targets for the future.
Commenting on today’s launch, FIH Executive Board member and Oceania Hockey Federation President Clare Prideaux, who leads the FIH Sustainability Task Force set up in 2021, said: “It is exciting to launch this Sustainability Strategy for Hockey that we have been working on for over 18 months. We invite all members of the global hockey community to play their part, to share their successes and to get involved in projects at the local, national and global level, that together will make a real difference to the sustainable future of our sport.”
In addition to the strategy, the FIH are showcasing a number of case studies of recent and current projects and have issued a call to action to the global hockey community to get involved.
On the same day of the launch of the FIH Sustainability Strategy for Hockey, FIH global partner Polytan has announced that the Paris 2024 Olympic hockey tournaments will be played on hockey’s first carbon zero turf, called Poligras Paris GT zero. “We are delighted that Paris 2024 will be a ‘hockey zero’ event. This innovation by our trusted partner Polytan, in addition to the continued reduction in the use of water for pitches, confirms hockey’s determination to fully support and contribute to the Paris 2024 sustainability targets”, FIH CEO Thierry Weil said.
