Lausanne, Switzerland: As we approach the start of a new season of the FIH Hockey Pro League, we are delighted to reveal the winner of the Poligras Magic Skill Award for the 2021-22 Season, as voted for by hockey fans the world over.
From 10-16 October, fans have voted to pick a moment that really captured the magic of our sport in this award, presented by FIH Global Supplier Polytan. The shortlist for the Poligras Magic Skill Award featured six wonderful flashes of brilliance that graced the turf during the fiercely competitive 2021-22 edition of the competition, ranging from Tom Sorsby’s incredible goal line save to Tom Boon’s magical deflected goal with his back turned to the goal.
However, there could be only one winner, with the Poligras Magic Skill Award going to María José Granatto of Argentina, for her complete wizardry with the stick in her team’s match against England. Her creation of a goal scoring opportunity for her teammate came out of nowhere as she dribbled past 6 defenders in a tight space, and lifted the ball over the on-rushing keeper to her teammate Julieta Jankunas, who had an open goal to tap the ball into. The moment of brilliance from Granatto narrowly edged out another moment of ingenuity from Belén Iglesias of Spain, whose goal against India showcased a combination of goalscoring instincts and spectacular ability as she took two touches with her back to the goal to lift the ball on to her stick and loop it over the keeper and defenders, perfectly into the top corner of the goal. The competition was incredibly close as the margin between the top-2 spots was exactly 1%! The success in the Poligras Magic Skill Award is yet another feather in María José Granatto’s cap, as she was among the best players for Argentina as they won their maiden FIH Hockey Pro League title in the 2021-22 season, followed by a silver medal at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Spain and Netherlands 2022, where she was also awarded the Best Player of the tournament!
