The men's Hero Hockey Champions Trophy and women's Hockey Champions Trophy took place in London, Great Britain between 10-26 June and despite the British weather, both events proved big hits with all of those involved.
Those who attended were treated to a bold, loud and hugely entertaining event.
In addition to the world class hockey on display, an extensive fan engagement programme was undertaken in and around the venue during both events.
Food stalls with cuisine representing all of the participating teams; shops selling hockey goodies; activities where fans could test their hockey skills or places where friends could meet for a drink and a discussion about the matches they have just seen, all added to the carnival atmosphere created by hosts Great Britain Hockey in cooperation with the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
Here are the top 10 things that fans at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre were able to do during breaks from the action on the field:
- Create lasting memories at the fan photo locations. They were spread out across the venue and with calls to action clearly displayed, fans were able to share the fun with the teams.
- Fans could try the latest sport “Snooky”. This addictive game was half hockey / half snooker, and boy did it catch on.
- American hot dogs? German frankfurters? British bangers? The Street Market offered fresh food on offer from each and every competing nation.
- Visitors could test their skills at The Hockey Hub. Aimed at all ages and abilities, there was loads to do throughout the tournament. For example an inflatable pitch; a stick duel; speed cage; Instagram printers and much much more.
- All merchandising needs were covered - from replica shirts to hockey sticks - a giant retail store had it all. Fans could also find even more bars, catering outlets and plenty of big screens showing match day highlights and live sports.
- A Pimms Garden proved a big hit, with fans able to relax with a cool drink and some fresh ice cream
- The FIH's “Last Stop Rio!” activation space was also very popular. With Lee Valley's very own Copacabaña beach, a Rio Sky-Diving photobooth and a London Taxi photobooth, there was plenty to get fans moving. Using hashtags #HCT2016 #SambaSticks and #Rio2016, all the fans got into the Samba spirit ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
- Guests could enrich their hockey knowledge and learn all about the history of the sport in The Hockey Museum
- A Hockey Champions Trophy Passport provided visitors with an opportunity to win prizes by asking them to visit many of the attractions mentioned above to get stamps. Local sponsor Barrington Sports provided thousands of cool prizes for all of the fans completing the mission.
